Media Coalition Comments on FCC Notice of Inquiry

MB Docket No. 09-194:

On February 23, 2010, Media Coalition filed a comment in response to the Federal Comunication Commission's (FCC) issued Notice of Inquiry (NOI), "Empowering Parents and Protecting Children in an Evolving Media Landscape." In our comment, Media Coalition addresses the First Amendment's protections for different categories of speech, the limits on government-mandated parental controls, media effects research, and potential restrictions on advertising for First Amendment-protected speech.

The NOI solicited answers to a series of questions raised by the FCC regarding the potential opportunities and pitfalls today's media environment presents to minors. The Commission invited experts, industry professionals, and parents to submit comments regarding the extent and nature of minors' media use, the impact such use has on them, and the ways in which government can work to maximize benefits while minimizing harms.
