In February of 1985, the Colorado Supreme Court ruled that Colorado's harmful to minors law was unconstitutional in Tattered Cover, Inc. v. Tooley, a Media Coalition case. The law would have severely restricted older minors' and adults' First Amendment rights to browse, borrow, or buy material that is illegal for minors under Ginsberg v. New York decision because it would have barred retailers and librarians from selling or loaning to minors works containing certain sexual imagery and placed restrictions on the ways in which such material could be displayed.
